John Edgar travels the world to select the best quality stone for his sculpture. Here, he has transformed ochre limestone from Rajasthan, black basalt from Timaru and white limestone from Portugal into elegant pieces alluding to anchors. Continuing on from his recent solo exhibition ballast: bringing the stones home in Scotland, the artist references emigration, specifically the fishing sinkers, floats and anchors used on fishing and voyaging boats. One is invited to touch the stone and experience the textural changes within each piece.
John Edgar was born in Auckland in 1950 and lives there today. His exhibition history is extensive, featuring in solo, group and curated shows which have toured nation-wide and most recently to the National Museum of Scotland as part of the Edinburgh Arts Festival and Year of the Homecoming. His valued work is held in both private and public collections in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the United States of America. John has been awarded several Arts Council Grants and has most recently been honoured as Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009.
